Directly Benefit Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity With the Donation of Your Vehicle!
Cars for Homes™ distributes the funds raised from the sale of your car donation directly to your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate to help build homes. Auction-quality vehicles (late-model, running and in good condition) generate significantly more funds than salvaged or recycled car donations. Cars for Homes™ program costs are kept as low as possible, and donated vehicles are sold through a national network of diverse venues to optimize revenues for local Habitat for Humanity affiliates.
Receive possible tax benefits for your generosity!
Habitat for Humanity International is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. If you itemize deductions on your income tax return, it may be possible to claim a deduction for donating your car. In general, donors who itemize their taxes may deduct the fair market value of any donated vehicle up to $499. If your vehicle sells for more than $500, you may deduct the full selling price. You will receive the appropriate receipt from Habitat for Humanity for your car donation. How it works:
- Car donations are processed by Advanced Remarketing Services, Inc., Habitat for Humanity International’s authorized national agent.
- All types of vehicles are accepted. You can donate vehicles—including automobiles, trucks, RVs, boats, airplanes, and farm and construction equipment—running or not!
- Donors provide information and answer questions about the vehicle they wish to donate, including the make, model, vehicle identification number and current mileage.
- Most whole vehicles with proper title information are accepted, unless the costs of processing and towing fees exceed the auction value of the vehicle. In that case, it will not be accepted.
- After acceptance of the car donation, donors are provided instructions for processing the vehicle’s title. Assistance is also available if the vehicle’s title cannot be located. At the end of the online vehicle donation system, donors can print forms to complete the process.
- Arrangements are then made to have the title processed, and the donor is contacted to coordinate vehicle and key pickup by a licensed and insured member of Advanced Remarketing Service’s network of service providers.
- The vehicle donation is processed and sold on behalf of Habitat for Humanity.
- Donors receive an acknowledgement letter thanking them for their support and providing automobile donation information. This letter may be used as a receipt for tax deduction purposes, if the donor itemizes deductions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What types of vehicle donations are accepted?
Habitat’s Cars for Homes™ car donation program accepts almost all vehicles. You can donate cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, snowmobiles, trailers and recreational vehicles. Airplane and boat donations may require a phone call to see if they meet the minimum criteria.
What if the vehicle is not running?
Your vehicle donation does not have to be running, but it must be whole and have four inflated tires so it can be moved by our towing operators. You will be asked to explain the condition of the vehicle. In rare cases, Cars for Homes™ is unable to accept some car donations when the cost of transport and processing fees exceed the auction value of the vehicle.
How long will it take to have my vehicle picked up?
All car donations made to Cars for Homes™ are processed as quickly as possible. Typically the vehicle is picked up within two or three days after the title is received by our processing center in Rhode Island. You can accelerate the car donation process by inputting information and downloading documents online. Special arrangements can be made whenever car donations must be made more quickly.
What documents do I need to donate a car?
Most states require a clear title to the vehicle, and some states also require a notarized signature or additional forms to complete a vehicle donation. If you cannot locate or have lost the certificate of title, we can help you obtain the proper documentation and forms.
What if the vehicle is not registered in my name?
The vehicle does not need to be registered in your name. The name on the title may often differ from the name on the registration documents. Call Cars for Homes™ at 877-277-HFHI (4344) for more information.
How much of the money generated by the sale of my car donation goes to Cars for Homes™?
Cars for Homes™ strives to run the most efficient vehicle donation program in the country. We take very seriously our responsibility to be good stewards of all car donations. On a monthly basis, our program has historically received more than 80 percent of the sales revenues. We have paid less than 20 percent of the selling price for towing, auction and processing fees. By comparison, some charities pay third-party, for-profit vehicle donation programs up to 70 percent in fees.
How do I know my vehicle is in good hands once it’s been picked up?
Habitat for Humanity uses a licensed and insured national transportation network and complies with all federal and state regulations. By signing the title directly to Advanced Remarketing Services, Habitat for Humanity’s nationally authorized agent, you are legally transferring ownership of your vehicle. When your title is received and your vehicle is picked up, you are no longer responsible for the vehicle.
