Faces of Habitat: Meet Valerie

11/21/2025

We’re excited to kick off a new feature called Faces of Habitat. This series is all about shining a light on the amazing people who make Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity what it is. Each month, you’ll get to know a different member of our team and see what inspires them both on and off the job!

This month, we chatted with Valerie, Habitat's Family Success Manager. She has been working for Habitat for Humanity since January of 2023 and she adds so much warmth and at times, silliness to the office. She is always the one suggesting we participate in TikTok trends and she's pulled off more pranks than the rest of the staff members combined.
Picture

What is your favorite part about working with Habitat? In other words, what is your why?

My favorite part is the team I work with and the families we meet along the way. I always knew I wanted to help people but I didn't know how I would do that. It has been so rewarding to see families achieve their dreams of buying a home.

What is one moment that stands out from your time at Habitat?

Letting families know they have been accepted into the homeownership program! One time, we invited a group of future homeowners into the office for a surprise acceptance. To get them info the office, we told them our selection committee had some follow-up questions. The entire committee and our staff were all in on it and everyone was acting really serious. We took them back to the conference room and our CEO, Jessica, started off the "review meeting" using a fake presentation that I created. You could tell everyone was nervous, but on the second slide of the presentation, it said something like, "Just kidding, you have been accepted, congratulations!" It was so fun to see their reaction.

More recently, one of my coworkers and I dressed up as our Construction & Facility Director, Matt, which was a great prank. He took it well and we made a funny video together for our social media channels.

What is something you love to do when you're not at work?

I love to go to the gym, make crafts, break in my espresso machine, participate in local theater, play tennis, spend time with loved ones, travel, and watch tv.

Just for fun: if you could instantly become an expert at anything, what would it be?

A lot of things! I would love to know several languages (I'm currently learning Italian on Duolingo) and I would love to be able to hit high "whistle notes" like Ariana Grande with no practice. I would love to be able to do a pull up (currently only at about 90 degrees) and do fun yoga poses (my handstand needs some work). Finally, I would love to know about car mechanics. In theory, I know how to change my oil and oil filter, but in practice, I'm not so sure. 😆

Why Now is the Perfect Time to Volunteer

11/20/2025

Have you been spending more time lately reflecting on what is important? We are in that window of time when one year is wrapping up, and a new one is beginning; a time when many of us pause to reflect on our goals and our gratitude.

Because of this, it’s also a time of year that many of us start to think about some additional ways we can give back to our community through volunteer opportunities!

End-of-Year Giving
Picture
As the holidays approach, many of us struggle to find the perfect gift. Instead of purchasing another item that may be forgotten, have you considered giving the gift of time? Volunteering on behalf of a loved one at an organization they care about is a meaningful tribute. It lets them know you honor their values and want to embody the same spirit of generosity you admire so much. What could be more meaningful than that?

The Volunteer Center of Brown County makes it easy to find volunteer opportunities in the area by matching people with opportunities that fit their interests and schedules. You could spend a few hours helping out at a food pantry, mentoring a young person, or assisting seniors. Each act of service becomes a gift that ripples beyond the moment.
Picture
New Year, New You!

After the holidays, we start to think about the kind of life we want to live during the year ahead. Along with the traditional personal finance and self-improvement goals, many of us think about ways we can give back to the community. And it’s good that we do this! Studies show that volunteering 100 hours a year or more significantly reduces the risk of chronic illnesses in older adults and that volunteers have a 76% lower risk of feeling isolated.

If this is something you’ve been thinking about, but you’re not sure where to start, the Volunteer Center of Brown County is always happy to help connect you with organizations that need help right now. You might be asked to serve meals, help out at an animal shelter, or who knows, work a regular shift in the Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity ReStore!

Setting a goal to volunteer more in the new year means that you are thinking beyond yourself and looking for ways to enrich the lives of those in your community. And unlike many resolutions that fade by February, volunteering might just become a lifelong habit!

Other Ways to Give Back

Volunteering your time isn’t the only way to contribute. This time of year is also a popular time for people to declutter their homes or storage units. Donating your gently used items to local nonprofits keeps resources circulating in the community. For example, Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity ReStore accepts furniture, working appliances, and building materials, then sells them at 50%-75% off retail prices to support Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership Program. Other organizations in the community are happy to accept donations of gently used clothing, food, and household goods.

Financial contributions are another great option. Cash donations help nonprofits cover operating costs and expand their services, and these charitable gifts may even provide tax benefits! This is a great way to extend your impact beyond what you can give in person, ensuring organizations have the resources to serve more people throughout the year.
Finding Opportunities in Greater Green Bay
As you can see, there are countless ways to get involved with local organizations who need support. Indoor options like the ReStore are especially appealing during the winter months, while food pantries, senior services, and youth programs are always looking for extra hands. There is even such a thing as virtual volunteering! In fact, 18% of volunteers are now serving completely or partially online according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

If you would like to know about volunteering at Habitat for Humanity or the ReStore, please visit greenbayhabitat.org/volunteer. Here, you can choose whether you want to volunteer as an individual or group and see the opportunities available on our calendar.
Picture
All volunteers must attend a one-hour orientation meeting before getting started (these are offered several times per month and are also listed on our calendar).

Volunteering doesn’t have to be overwhelming or time-consuming. Whether you commit to a few hours a month or take on a regular role, it all makes a difference. And with so many opportunities available, there has never been a better time to get involved. Now is the perfect time to invest in your community with your time, your talents, and your generosity.

How Giving Tuesday Strengthens Communities

11/18/2025

After the rush of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday offers us something a little bit different: a chance to pause, reflect, and think about how we want to give back to our local communities.
Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 at the 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City.

It is now an independent nonprofit and a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people in more than 80 countries to support organizations that align with their values.

Picture
The idea is simple but powerful. Instead of focusing on what we can buy, Giving Tuesday asks us to think about what we can give. It’s a time when ordinary acts add up to extraordinary change. People volunteer at shelters, organize food drives, stock community fridges, support mutual aid funds, and share messages of hope and solidarity.

If you want to take part, there are countless ways to do so! Here are just a few ideas:

  • Use your voice to support a cause that matters to you.
  • Show kindness to your neighbors in simple, everyday ways.
  • Volunteer virtually or share your talents with an organization that needs them.
  • Join a local fundraiser, community drive, or coordinated event.
  • Donate to your favorite nonprofit during Giving Tuesday.

Even though Giving Tuesday is just one day (typically... more on that in a moment), it is an impactful way to build a culture around compassion and connection that has the power to last much, much longer.

Our 2025 Giving Tuesday Campaign

This year, Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity is proud to be part of the CoVantage Cares Foundation’s Giving Tuesday campaign. From December 2–16, this campaign aims to double the impact of donations made to 12 participating nonprofit organizations, including Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity.

Here’s how it works: When you give to us through the CoVantage campaign page, your donation is matched dollar-for-dollar. That means your $50 gift becomes $100, your $100 gift becomes $200, and so on, up to $10,000 per organization. After that milestone is reached, we will unlock a share of the $200,000 total match fund, which will be distributed among the participating nonprofits based on the percentage each raises.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 during the two-week Giving Tuesday campaign. All of the money we raise will go directly toward building homes in Brown County.

To make sure your gift is matched, donations must be made through the CoVantage Credit Union Giving Tuesday portal, which we will share with you once the campaign is live. You can follow along with our progress on the page and on our social media channels, such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn!

Will You Help Us Reach Our Goal?

We would love to have the community’s support as we work to reach our $50,000 goal during Giving Tuesday! Here are three easy ways you can help us:

  • Donate between December 2–16 through the CoVantage campaign and
  • Spread the word by sharing the campaign with friends, family, and coworkers.
  • Stay connected by following our updates and celebrating the progress together.

Even though we’re setting a big goal and we are thrilled about the momentum of Giving Tuesday, it’s important to remember that our mission doesn’t begin or end with this campaign. Habitat’s work continues all year long.

When you support Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity during Giving Tuesday, you’re helping future homeowners achieve stability. This strengthens our community and shows that generosity has the power to build lasting change. Together, we’re building hope, opportunity, and a stronger Greater Green Bay.

Making the Most of Your Retirement Giving

9/30/2025

As we move into the final months of the year, many retirees are taking a closer look at their finances, particularly their Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs). If you are age 73 or older and have funds in an eligible IRA (Traditional, Rollover, or Inherited), the IRS requires you to withdraw a certain percentage from your tax-deferred retirement accounts each year.

While many people rely on these withdrawals for living expenses, others find they don’t necessarily need the income. The catch? These distributions are subject to income tax. For those in higher tax brackets, the required withdrawals can create a significant tax burden.

But there’s good news. The IRS offers a unique option for charitable-minded retirees: the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution?

If you’re age 70½ or older, you can donate directly from your IRA to a qualified charity without paying any income tax on the gift. The distribution must be made directly from your IRA to an eligible 501(c)(3) charitable organization, with a maximum annual limit of $108,000 per individual and $216,000 for married couples filing jointly.

Instead of withdrawing the money yourself (and owing taxes on it), you can direct your financial institution to send the funds to the charity of your choice. Plus, with a QCD, the distribution does not get treated as income, reducing your risk of entering a higher tax bracket.

Here’s a real-world example for you:

Say your RMD is $25,000 and you’re in a 28% tax bracket. Normally, you’d owe about $7,000 in taxes on that withdrawal. But if you decide to donate $10,000 of your distribution to a charity using the QCD, the amount will go directly to the charity tax-free and you’ve decreased your tax burden by around $2,800 and you’ve supported a cause you care about.

It’s truly a win-win!

Other Smart Ways to Give

At Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity, we’ve been blessed by supporters who have found creative and meaningful ways to give:

Stock donations – If you’ve invested in stocks that have gained significant value (think Procter & Gamble, Apple, or Microsoft), you can donate the stock directly to Habitat. You minimize your capital gains tax, become eligible for an immediate income tax deduction, and Habitat will receive the full value of your gift.

Legacy gifts – Recently, an anonymous supporter left Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity a perennial gift though naming us as a beneficiary on several of her accounts. This has fully funded an entire home in our Habitat Homestead development. In the future when this house is sold to a future homebuyer, we will be able to reinvest the proceeds over time and this gift will have the potential to fund up to five additional homes. Talk about the ripple effect of generosity!

Beneficiary designations – You can name Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity as a full or partial beneficiary on retirement accounts, investment funds, or insurance policies. Any change like this allows you to leave a lasting legacy without impacting your day-to-day finances.

Why Act Now?

Qualified Charitable Distributions must be completed by December 31. Because the funds need to be transferred directly from your IRA custodian to the charity (you cannot take the money yourself and then donate it), it’s important to allow enough time for processing. This is why many people use this season to meet with their financial advisors, update beneficiaries, and make decisions about their charitable giving. If you’ve ever thought about making an impact with your legacy, now is the perfect time to explore your options.

If the idea of charitable giving resonates with you, we encourage you to:
  1. Talk with your financial advisor or tax professional. They can help you understand how these strategies fit into your overall financial plan.

  2. Consider Habitat for Humanity of Greater Green Bay. Your generosity helps local families build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.

  3. Reach out to us. Our Philanthropy Director, Natalie Farmer, would be happy to discuss the many ways you can partner with us to leave a legacy of hope. You can reach out to her via email at [email protected].

At the heart of all charitable giving is this question:

How do you take what’s most important to you and pay it forward?

For many of our supporters, the answer is clear; invest in homes, communities, and futures.

Building Stronger Neighborhoods, One Upgrade at a Time

9/9/2025

Every house tells a story. Every neighborhood carries generations of memories, laughter, and connection. At Habitat for Humanity, we believe that when we strengthen homes, we strengthen communities, and that’s exactly what Rock the Block is all about.

Rock the Block is a community revitalization program where volunteers, homeowners, and partners come together to complete exterior repair, maintenance, and beautification upgrades in a specific neighborhood. From porch repairs to accessibility updates and yard cleanups, these efforts create safer, more vibrant neighborhoods where families can continue to thrive.

But Rock the Block isn’t just about paint, nails, or new landscaping. It’s about people. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors, families finding renewed pride in their homes, and communities coming together to work toward a common goal.

Britney’s Story: Home is Where Her Roots Are

For Britney, homeownership came at a young age. At just 23, she purchased her home on Columbia Avenue and she considered it her first big step into adulthood. That home became the setting for countless milestones and it’s where she’s built a life as a single mom.

“This house holds so many memories,” Britney shared. “It’s where I brought both my boys home. It’s small, but it’s ours.”

Her ties to the neighborhood run deep. Britney was raised by a single mom who lives on Park Street, and her grandma lived just across the street before she passed. Needless to say, there are great memories for Britney on nearly every block. She loves the way her neighborhood feels like a family, still. “We’re nosy in the best way,” Britney laughed. “Neighbors are always watching out, lending a hand, and handing out popsicles to the kids. It means a lot to me.”

Britney applied to the Rock the Block program with and mentioned that there were some yard and porch updates on her wish list. First, she wanted help clearing out some old pavers and a broken flag pole because they get in the way of football and baseball practices with her boys (she coaches both and loves bonding with her kiddos in this way).

In addition to some yard upgrades, her dream is to have a porch that’s safe enough to use. She really enjoys sitting outside, especially when a storm is rolling in. We will be working alongside a licensed contractor to take down her current porch and build a new one that is large enough and safe enough for her to sit with her kids whenever she wants.

For Britney, it’s not just about fixing up her house. It’s about ensuring her boys grow up with the same sense of belonging and stability she once felt in this same neighborhood.

Catherine’s Story: A Fresh Start in Green Bay

When Catherine bought her home on Gray Street, it was a fresh start. After relocating from Chicago, she fell in love with Green Bay’s energy, its people, and of course, the irresistible energy of the Green Bay Packers and Lambeau Field. She was thrilled to find a home that was close enough to experience that energy on home game days.

Since she is a veteran, Catherine was able to use her VA benefits to purchase the home, just as her three children moved back in with her during the pandemic.

“I finally felt like I belonged,” she said. “This city has become such a part of my life. I honestly can’t imagine living anywhere else.”

But the joy of homeownership came with a few unexpected challenges (as it often does). Hidden issues like a deteriorating porch and broken stairs made her home feel unsafe and overwhelming to maintain, especially as she was recovering from two hip replacement surgeries.

“The porch felt impossible,” Catherine admitted. “It wasn’t something I could do on my own — not financially and not physically.”

Through Rock the Block, her porch is being rebuilt, which will give her peace of mind. “Now I can walk outside without worrying that a board might give out, and I feel safe letting others use it too.”

Along with our amazing volunteers, we will also be removing a non-functional hot tub that takes up a lot of space in her backyard. Once it’s gone, she and her children will be able to reclaim the space and add a garden that they can nurture together.

The Lasting Impact of Rock the Block

At Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity, we believe lasting change happens when people come together. Rock the Block is a neighborhood revitalization event, but it’s also proof of the power of partnership. When businesses, community groups, and neighbors unite around a shared purpose, incredible things can happen.

For homeowners like Britney and Catherine, Rock the Block brings peace of mind, stability, and the comfort of knowing they don’t have to face challenges alone. Even small updates like safer porches, open yards for kids to play, and restful spaces that bring families together. And when volunteers and neighbors roll up their sleeves side by side, they don’t just improve homes — they strengthen the entire community.
