How Women Build Empowers Families in Brown County

5/12/2026

When women come together with a shared purpose, the results can be transformative. That belief is at the heart of Women Build, a powerful initiative that brings people together to create safe, affordable housing while uplifting women‑led households across Brown County.

What is Women Build?

Women Build is a community‑driven program that invites individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to roll up their sleeves and help build a Habitat home for a local women‑led household. While the program prioritizes women’s leadership and participation, volunteers of all gender identities are welcomed and encouraged to join us on the build site and beyond!

Why Women Build Matters

Women‑led families are more than twice as likely to live in poverty compared to households led by men, and many face limited access to affordable homebuying opportunities or live in inadequate housing conditions. Women Build directly addresses these issues by channeling community resources, volunteer energy, and donor support into a tangible, lasting solution.
Homeownership represents stability, dignity, and opportunity and for women‑led families, it can be life‑changing. As one local Habitat homeowner, Sheena, shared:

“I have been wanting a house for my kids and I to call home. We are very grateful that we have a stable home and enough space to live. ”

No Experience Needed to Help Out

One of the most inspiring aspects of Women Build is its accessibility. No prior construction experience is required to lend a hand. Habitat staff, skilled volunteers, and construction managers are there to provide hands‑on training and ensure everyone can contribute safely and confidently.

The build site tasks that are available will depend on the phase of construction, but you might be assisting with things like:

  • Capping the foundation of a home
  • Framing and raising walls
  • Installing exterior siding
  • Installing doors, windows, and flooring
  • Painting
  • Landscaping
  • Preparing meals for build crews

Women Build is the perfect volunteer opportunity if you’re looking to meet new people, or for groups who want to make an impact together. Many volunteers return year after year, drawn by the opportunity to support women‑led families on their journey to homeownership. They tell us that it feels good to be part of something bigger than themselves.

Become a Women Build Sponsor

In addition to volunteering, Women Build sponsors play an incredibly important role in making these projects possible. Sponsoring our annual Women Build is a great way to align your brand with an initiative that supports equity, inclusion, and empowerment. Your branding will be featured on volunteer shirts and the Women Build webpage for the full year.

To learn more, you can email Natalie Farmer at [email protected]. Sponsorships can also be made directly on our website.

Women Build is a movement rooted in empowerment, equity, and hope. By volunteering, fundraising, or sponsoring this program, you can help ensure that women‑led households in Brown County have access to safe, affordable housing and the opportunity to thrive.
