Green Bay Habitat Blog

Turn your old wheels into new beginnings

2/9/2026

Do you have a vehicle that you no longer use or need? Your car, truck, SUV, boat, or trailer could help Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity build a new home in our community!

Habitat for Humanity makes it fast and easy to donate a vehicle, and by doing so, you may qualify for a tax deduction. Vehicle donations to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the United States have raised over $72 million just in the last five years!

Your vehicle will be sold on behalf of Habitat through a national network of auctions and direct buyers. Since launching Cars for Homes in 2005, Habitat for Humanity has accepted over 160,000 vehicles for reselling or recycling, raising funds for Habitat to partner with local families to build stability and security that a safe, affordable home allows.
I could not believe I could donate my junk car and help Habitat for Humanity. It had been in an accident, but you still towed my car away quickly and easily!

What kinds of vehicles can be donated?

We accept almost all vehicles, including cars, trucks, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, farm equipment, and construction equipment. If you want to donate your car or truck, please visit this page for more information. If you want to donate any other type of vehicle, please call 1-877-277-HFHI (4344).

What happens to the cars once they’re donated?

About half of the cars that get donated are then sold to licensed dealers at wholesale auctions and are reused for transportation. The other half are typically transported to auto salvage yards where all reusable car parts, batteries, tires and fluids are removed. Vehicles that can be recycled are crushed, shredded, and recycled into steel.

Habitat receives funds for each donated vehicle, although a car sold at auction generally generates more revenue than one that is recycled. Every donation makes a difference, and the families that partner with us are extremely grateful for your help.

How much of the money goes to Habitat for Humanity?

Our partners at Advanced Remarketing Services return a higher percentage than any other vehicle processing entity. On a monthly basis, between 84% and 87% of the gross revenue generated from vehicle sales comes back to Habitat for Humanity.

In fact, Forbes has recognized Habitat for Humanity as one of the best charities to donate your car or other vehicle because of our “open and longstanding transparency, the ease with which it accepts vehicle donations and how the organization uses the money raised from sale proceeds.”

What is the environmental impact of donating my car?

Recycling cars keeps a huge amount of steel out of landfills. According to the National Material Company, more than 80 million tons of steel are recycled each year in North America. For every ton of steel recycled, 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal, and 120 pounds of limestone are conserved.

Cars recycled properly can play a big role in reducing carbon emissions because recycling reduces the need to refine new materials. Recycling steel also saves the equivalent energy to power about 18 million households per year. So, as you can see, donating your vehicle to Cars for Homes is a win for both the community and the environment!

What are the steps to donating my car?

First, you will need to gather some basic information about the vehicle you want to donate, such as:

  • Valid car title, free of liens
  • Year, make and model
  • VIN
  • Body type
  • Mileage
  • Condition
  • Date the vehicle was last driven

This is not a complete list. For a full list of vehicle donation needs, you can check out the donation wizard. It has answers to tax questions, donation tips, and frequently asked questions so you can decide if this is the right path for you.

Even if you can’t donate a vehicle, you can still make a difference in your local community. A one-time or recurring donation can help individuals and families obtain safe, affordable homes in Brown County. Learn more about supporting Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity on our support page.
