Faith IN ACTION

Each year, Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity partners together with local churches and volunteers in Green Bay to make a difference for a local family.  Faith in Action brings members of local churches together to live out their faith in a new way. Experience firsthand how God touches the hearts of new Habitat homeowners - and the volunteers who work alongside them.
Join us in doing mission work in Brown County!
Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity's Faith in Action brings local churches together to raise roofs, walls, funds and prayers to build a house in partnership with a family in our community.

It's an opportunity to live out your church's ministry, engage your members and see the miracle that occurs.

Bring Faith in Action To Life In Your Congregation

Partnering with Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity's Faith in Action is an exciting way for members of your congregation to make an immediate impact where they live, work and worship. Faith in Action projects call people to leave the halls of the church to serve in the way the original apostles served.
Churches are invited to participate in Faith in Action through prayer, volunteerism, and financial support. Here are some ideas for putting faith into action to help a local family in need of decent, affordable housing.

Prayer Support

Lift the faith Build up in prayer; pray for all persons in need of shelter.
Put a brief article in the church newsletter and bulletin about the ministry of Habitat for Humanity and Faith in Action.

The Process is Easy. The Work is a Labor of Love.

How Your Church Benefits
Faith in Action gives your church members a concrete way to put their faith into action and see tangible results. But that's just the beginning. Faith in Action also:
  • Builds a community within your church.
  • Empowers church members to serve in their community.
  • Gives people of faith an opportunity to engage in construction and non-construction activities and be the body of Christ in the world.
  • Helps build community among Christian churches.

Choose How to Serve
There are many ways for church members to get involved with Faith in Action on and off the construction site:
  • Organize on-site volunteer days for your church members. Alternatively, organize an on-site volunteer day in the ReStore.
  • Make a financial contribution.
  • Organize a fundraising activity.
  • Provide lunch for on-site workers.
  • Participate at ground-breaking and dedication events.
  • Form a prayer group.

Volunteer Off-Site

In addition to volunteering on the build site, there are many non-construction activities  adults and older children can participate in. For example:
  • Create a display as a visual reminder of the Faith in Action project for display in your church. Update it frequently to show progress and photos of activities.
  • Plan an educational workshop or social event. Work with Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity to invite members of a Habitat homeowner family to speak during the event to share how owning a home has made a difference in their lives.
  • Organize children's activities:
    • Make a welcome basket or other housewarming gifts for the homeowner family.
    • Sing a song at a dedication ceremony.
    • Tour the work site and learn about sweat equity from a homeowner.
    • Decorate blocks or bricks that can be used as fundraising items.

Fundraising Ideas

While the majority of funds for Faith in Action may come from individual donations, significant funds are often raised during special events and activities. Projects like these can help keep members of the church excited and involved in Faith in Action.
  • Take a special offering or have a special pledge Sunday. (Use construction hats as offering plates.)
  • Plan a social and spice it up with a Faith in Action speaker and entertainment.
  • Trade treasures and host a donation drive for the ReStore.
  • Get creative with a craft show with a portion of the sales donated to Faith in Action.
  • Hold a "2x4 Sunday" and sell 2x4s that are used in home build construction to members of the congregation. Invite purchasers to sign the 2x4 and write encouraging messages on them.
  • Collect aluminum cans and other metals.
  • Host a bake sale or craft sale.
  • Organize a group in your church to make a dinner and sell meal tickets.
Housing Themed Fundraisers

Pennies for Property
Donate a penny per square foot of your own house. For example, if you own a 2,400 square foot house, you could donate $24.

Buy a Square Foot of a House
Buy a square foot of the Faith Build house. The cost is determined by taking the cost of the house sponsorship divided by the square footage of the house. For example, if the Faith Build house sponsorship is $90,000 and the house is 1,500 square feet, then the cost per square foot would be roughly $60 to help support building costs.

Sign a Stud
Churches can purchase standard 2x4 studs for members to sign their names, write positive messages or blessings, and draw pictures on for the home build. Many churches or groups set a price of $5 or $10 to purchase and sign each stud. Studs are 92 5/8" in length, non-pressure treated, and limited in quantity.

Buy a Brick
Create a grid on a poster and draw a house. Sell sections of the grid, or "bricks," and write donors' names in the spaces. Set the price of a "brick" between $10 and $20 per family.

Pay the Necessary Working Wages of a Green Bay Resident
According to the Out of Reach report conducted in 2021 by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, a Brown County resident must earn $17.15 per hour to afford a two-bedroom apartment with a  fair market rent of $892. Therefore, individuals would donate $17.15 toward the build of a Habitat house.

Pay the Working Wages of Volunteers
Organize a group to volunteer on a Habitat build site for a day. Then ask another group to pay the working wages of the volunteers for that day. Many groups determine the working wage to be the minimum wage (Wisconsin minimum wage is currently $7.25). Volunteers will serve on a Habitat build site for six to seven hours.
